Thirteen
I was heaving my bag out of the SUV, preparing to carry it onto the jet, when one of Valentineâs men swiftly took it from my hands. Standing back, I watched as two more appeared, gathering various heavy duffels that were bursting at the seams with more guns and ammo than I could count. His men were swarming all over the place, emptying the three cars that carried us to the private airstrip. Before long, all of our luggage was loaded. His usual security detail had been tripled, revealing just how on edge everyone was feeling.
Ravius boarded the jet without a second glance, leaving Valentine lingering at the steps. I gave him a nod, waving him on as I lingered back to say my goodbyes. Once he disappeared inside, I walked over to Daniel, where I was engulfed in a tight embrace. His chin rested on my head and my ear pressed to his chest. The roaring heartbeat was all I could hear, until he pulled back to look at me.
âBe careful, stay alert, and keep your eyes open.â
âOf course.â I nodded.
âOnly talk to people when necessary and keep the details to a minimum. Let Ravius do the diplomacy, just smile and nod. Donât engage or draw attention to yourself. Itâll be over quickly.â
âFor the tenth time, Iâll be fine. Itâs just a party and believe it or not, I know how to behave. Besides, this place sounds like Fort Knox from what Iâve heard. The government is hardly going to be lax on security. Plus, we have a miniature army accompanying us.â
I jabbed a thumb over my shoulder at the entourage, armed to the teeth as they boarded.
âI should be coming, not these morons,â Daniel grunted.
âYouâre needed here. Did Felix give you an update?â
âYeah. Weâve narrowed down the possibilities for Caineâs hideout to two most likely locations, based on my knowledge of his movements over the years and the sale records. One is in South Dakota and one in Arizona. I think itâs probable that heâs in one of these bunkers, but thereâs no way of knowing for sure yet. Weâve got to cross-reference public records and gather intel before we make a move.â
I grinned, feeling an exciting rush of victory. âExactly why you need to stay here then. Someone has to oversee things and prepare for us to move as soon as possible. And thereâs the sickness to consider too.â
No-one knew quite what to make of it, so âthe sicknessâ was what we designated the strange goings on with people dropping like flies. The extent of the issue was being kept tightly under wraps to avoid a mass panic, but we all knew that the situation was growing serious. Just over the Christmas break another five hospitalisations had occurred, though thankfully no-one had died. Yet. They were being kept in induced comas until we could figure out why their bodies were attempting to shut down.
âNone of that means anything if you all get yourselves killed.â
âThat wonât happen. Besides, Iâve got this,â I said.
